Camiba Gallery is excited to present Entangled, an exhibit of Charlotte Smith’s most recent paintings. Opening Thursday August 25th with a reception from 6-8:30pm, the exhibit runs
through September 24th.

Collected and respected for her experimental approach to painting, Charlotte Smith is well established as royalty in Texas contemporary abstract art. Gallerist Troy Campa muses, “For me it is forever awe-inspiring to watch the never-ending creativity of Charlotte Smith
as she pursues her passion of experimenting with paint – the result is always a unique
object of beauty.”

With many of the artworks in the exhibit, Charlotte pushes her paint drips, drops, and marks in a more formal direction; stringing them together into bands that collectively begin to create larger elements that appear to drift, flow, or dance across the canvas. Yet other artworks in this exhibit continue Charlotte Smith’s recent creative trajectory of soft environmental works, but instead of the soft off-white hues of recent works, she is using a bolder, more dramatic color palette. When examined closely, even these environmental works seem to have bands of tangles that weave in and out of the mist.

About the artist:

Charlotte Smith has created an artistic practice that has culminated in 20 years of exploration into pure process-driven abstraction. Over the course of her career, Smith has constantly pushed the physical boundaries of painting, through the arduous building and layering of drips and drops. Smith has pushed her dots into amorphous shapes as layer upon layer builds and extends across the canvas’ terrain, creating a dynamic composition that engages the eye to move and explore. Loose ties to the macro and micro environments of String Theory prevail in these lyrical cosmic/cellular/populated compositions.

Charlotte received her MFA from the University of North Texas. She has had thirty solo exhibitions and has been selected for more than twenty juried exhibitions, often receiving awards. Smith is firmly entrenched in Texas Art History - she was recently included in the following publications: GlobalCorporate Collections (2015), Texas Abstract (2014), The State of the Art: Contemporary Artists in Texas (2012), and Texas Artists Today (2010). Her work can be found in the collections of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, the Museum of Southeast Texas, the South Texas Institute for the arts, Neiman Marcus (stores nationwide), Kendra Scott corporate collection (at corporate headquarters and stores in Austin & New Orleans), as well as many additional significant collections, both private and corporate, throughout the country.
