Lorena Morales’ artistic practice is concerned with the idea of home, specifically our memory of home. Until now, the majority of her explorations of this theme have considered Home as a place and have often been filled with a sense of nostalgia and longing, sometimes addressing the loss of memory or loss of home. Now, with “im/perfect home” we see Lorena broadening her idea of home to not just a physical place, but a concept and condition. And in a significant way, she is facing the reality that home is not always perfect – some are imperfect. Perhaps a home is full of stress, perhaps it feels like a prison that you long to get out of (i.e., pandemic lockdown), and perhaps it is even abusive – these are all still home to someone, but perhaps not ideal.

In the artist’s own words:

“Collectively, these works ask what it means to represent a space that is such a multidimensional concept. Is it a place, a feeling, a practice, or a state of being in the world? How we, as individuals, think about home is charged with emotion, and may evoke feelings of safety, comfort, privacy, healing, connection and intimacy; just as it may evoke feelings of isolation, loss, melancholy, anxiety, or terror..”
