Orna Feinstein ~ Tree Spirit 39 ~ 2016 ~ 12”d

Layers of Time is Orna Feinstein’s fifth solo exhibition with Camiba Gallery and features artworks from her Tree Spirit series. Concerned with the interior geometry of the organic, artworks in this series are inspired by the vascular tissue of a tree; specifically as viewed through a microscope and as viewed when the tree trunk is sliced horizontally. Feinstein first created works in this series in 2002 and recently found a renewed interest in working on this series again. For this exhibit, we have curated some never-before-exhibited works from 2002 alongside new works. It is fascinating to explore these works side by side and notice the similarities and the differences in the methods, materials, and approach to the subject. A simultaneous viewing of Orna Feinstein’s Tree Spirit paintings of different ages is much like viewing the rhythm and spacing of a tree’s rings marking the passage of time and changes in their sustenance.

In the artist’s own words:

“I am inspired and fascinated by the interior geometry of the organic, the concentric patterns of tree rings, the linear patterns of wood grain, and the cellular structure of a plant as seen under the microscope. The concept of my work lies in the process and material.”
