Society lives in flux, constantly in a state of struggle between here and there, this or that. This exhibition showcases six artists who are observing the between. Be it through material, mode, or meaning; these artists exist in a liminal space.
Alicia Philley uses the illusory movement of lines and colors to recreate the feeling one has at the creeks and trails around Austin. Working on wood panels creates a literal connection to nature. She applies the base layer to highlight and reveal the natural grain and to provide a map for the lines to follow. Like nature, the flow of the wood grain is filled with both pattern and unpredictability. Her work exists between moments, like catching your reflection in the face of a lake or your first breath of the day.
GD Wright’s sculptural work is an interplay of heightened tension between material and form. The use of a steel mold elicits the feelings of an unchanging model, yet the bulbous forms interact with this foundation in abstract, organic and often unexpected ways. This network of fluidity and rigidity creates a push and pull that is dynamic, as the perception of the work becomes reliant on the viewer’s personal experience.
Steven Eggert Rabbit seeks new ways to communicate through spatial experiences, extending how images can relate to one another, and how photographs can express themselves in different physical forms. His design background influences his artistic endeavors as he creates an alternative world through nontraditional photographic practices and manipulation. The work exists in a space between material and mode, questioning the world we see.
Vy Ngo’s work uses layered color, movement, and mediums as a common thread to tell her story and move the viewer to a higher spiritual and social consciousness. As a Vietnamese-American, physician, and mother; order and chaos seem to be a normal part of everyday existence. With her work, she strives to create a dialogue about identity, culture, and political issues. Her many identities imbue her practice with diversity and vibrancy, bringing forth work as conceptual and varied as her life.
Andrea Hyland uses disparate media as a platform for interdisciplinary methods to build ideas, think creatively, and research freely. She is enamored with the abstract elements of art through which her practice becomes an exploration of materials that can be transformed into rich and expressive visual statements drawing in the whimsy of life.
Carmen Izurieta creates abstract art using a painting technique that applies color to encaustic. The unpredictability of the material forces her to rapidly make decisions spontaneously. Significance comes between the process and final form; where ego shows itself to be weak in the face of experimentation. Her work lends to the acceptance of the unpredictability of life.
Sarah Presson creates cut paper collages using a variety of printed materials from different eras. Interested in prompting viewers to embark on an esoteric journey, drifting between identification and vague recognition, her work seeks to create tactile views of psychological landscapes. She blends dissonance and harmony through the juxtaposition of paradoxical concepts and anachronistic combinations. The works in this series focus specifically on water and aim towards technical fluidity. Her intuitive approach to composition allows the subconscious to inhabit the space in surprising ways.
